028 – Yamashiro Onsen

Onsen is a Japanese hot spring and there are 1000s of them here of all different varieties of ambiance.

“[Hot springs are] the closest thing the normally stoic Japanese have to socially sanctioned hedonism”

– Getting Wet

We went on a day trip today to Yamashiro to the two spas pictured here.

I wish I could have taken a photo of the inside of this old onsen house. The place felt surreal and ancient in it’s simplicity. There was a waiting room in the top with tea that had some more modern amenities.

The bath house behind it offered a more spa-like experience with it’s steamy open, sunlit room, a garden view and soft music.

There are more secluded onsen Inns further up into the mountains from here that we plan to visit next time.
