052 – Give Peace a Chance

“Let me tell you now
Ev’rybody’s talking ’bout
Revolution, evolution, masturbation, flagellation, regulation, integrations
Meditations, United Nations, congratulations
 …
All we are saying is give peace a chance
All we are saying is give peace a chance”
– John Lennon

The peace symbol was created on this day in 1958.

According to the New York Times Back Story today, Gerald Holtom used several ideas to illustrate his “deep despair” over WWII and the growing nuclear arms race including using the flag-signaling codes “N” and “D” or “Nuclear Disarmament”.  Also, that he may have rather seen the symbol inverted to indicate arms outstretched upward and the flag code for “U” or “Unilateral Disarmament”.

I had no idea this symbol wasn’t just created by a bunch of stoned hippies on a bus trucking on to a Grateful Dead show.

Happy Birthday, Peace Symbol!!

  1. Love the new sun glasses! Thanks for sharing the origin of the peace symbol. Fear, hope and courage took such an unassuming design and transformed it into a universally recognized symbol. I hope the peace symbol has not lost it’s power to drive change.
